Backs and Sides

Aside from the soundboard, the wood chosen for the back and sides of the guitar will have the most profound impact on tone. Many woods can be used to make a pleasing guitar, but each one has its own characteristic sound.

Members of the rosewood family are certainly the most popular because they are beautiful and produce the sound that most people expect from a guitar. However, other woods such as maple, mahogany, koa, and walnut produce striking guitars that many enjoy. Although rarely used, domestic alternatives such as sycamore, and cherry can make wonderful guitars too.
